Ex e Increased Safety Equipment Inspection Checklist
This checklist covers all IEC 60079-17 inspection requirements for Ex e increased safety equipment — junction boxes, terminal boxes, luminaires, motors, and control stations.
Visual Inspection — Ex e
- IP gasket — visible compression set, cracking, or extrusion at enclosure joint
- All cover bolts present and correct
- Cable entries — all fitted with glands (no open entries)
- Nylon IP washers visible on threaded gland entries
- External earth tag present and uncorroded
- Enclosure body — no cracks or damage
- Cable sheath — undamaged where visible
Close Inspection — Ex e
- IP gasket — undamaged, correctly seated, providing effective seal
- Nylon IP washer present on threaded entry glands (Category A if missing)
- Serrated washer and locknut on clearance entry glands
- Conductor exposure — maximum 1mm bare conductor beyond ferrule in terminals
- Ferrules fitted to all conductors (Category A if missing)
- Terminal identification — all conductors labelled correctly
- Internal condition — dry, no condensation, no moisture ingress evidence
- Earth continuity — internal earth connection present and secure
Ex e vs Ex d Gland Accessories
The most common mistake in Ex e inspection is applying Ex d gland rules. Remember: Ex e threaded entries MUST have a nylon IP washer (Category A if missing). Ex d threaded entries must NOT have IP washers or locknuts. Keep these rules clearly separate in your mind.
