Ex d Flameproof Equipment Inspection Checklist

EX Academy Knowledge Base · IEC 60079 · CompEx Preparation · 2025

This inspection checklist covers all checks required for Ex d flameproof equipment under IEC 60079-17. Use this as a reference guide for preparing for CompEx Ex03/Ex04 assessments and for understanding what a complete Ex d inspection involves.

Visual Inspection — Ex d

  • All enclosure bolts present — count every bolt position (Category X if any missing)
  • Bolt heads undamaged and correct grade visible
  • Cable entries — all fitted with glands or stopping plugs (Category X if any open)
  • External earth tag present and uncorroded (Category A if corroded, B if discoloured)
  • Enclosure body — no cracks, impact damage, or penetrating corrosion
  • Cable sheath — undamaged where visible at gland entry
  • Warning labels — present and legible
  • No obvious paint overspray on flamepath area (visible from outside)

Close Inspection — Ex d

  • All bolt types and grades correct per certificate requirements
  • Cable gland thread engagement — minimum 5 full turns (Category X if less)
  • Stopping plug thread engagement — minimum 5 full turns
  • No IP washer or locknut on threaded Ex d entries
  • Barrier gland fitted where required (clearance entries always; threaded entries >2L)
  • Flamepath surface — clean, free from paint, corrosion, damage
  • Internal earth link present and connected
  • Internal condition — clean, dry, no foreign objects
  • Cover re-fitted with all bolts to correct torque

Detailed Inspection — Ex d (Additional)

  • Flamepath gap measurement with feeler gauges — compare to IEC 60079-1 Table 1
  • Flamepath surface dimensions — verify against certificate where accessible
  • Motor winding resistance (if applicable)
  • Certification check — certificate current, gas group/T-class matches area classification
Practice This Checklist

EX Academy's inspection simulations walk you through exactly this process — work order, equipment data, identification of deficiencies, and classification. Simulation 01 (Ex d motor) is the recommended starting point for Ex d inspection practice.
