Detailed Inspection Grade — Complete Guide
The detailed inspection grade is the most thorough of the three IEC 60079-17 inspection grades. It includes all visual and close inspection checks plus examination and measurement using tools and instruments — flamepath gap measurement, winding resistance testing, interlock verification, and dimensional checks against the equipment certificate.
What Detailed Inspection Adds
- Flamepath gap measurement — precision feeler gauges to measure actual gap against IEC 60079-1 Table 1 limits
- Motor winding resistance — checking for deterioration and moisture ingress
- Interlock operation — verifying door interlocks and pressure switch operation on Ex p equipment
- IS entity parameter verification — checking barrier and field device entity parameters match
- Dimensional checks — verifying internal dimensions against the Ex certificate where applicable
Detailed inspection is typically carried out every 3–5 years, or when there is specific concern about equipment condition. The exact frequency depends on the equipment type, environment severity, and operating conditions — determined by a risk assessment.
