Equipment Protection Level (EPL) — Ga Gb Gc Da Db Dc Explained
Equipment Protection Level (EPL) was introduced in IEC 60079-0 to provide a consistent classification of the level of protection provided by Ex equipment, independent of the specific protection type used. Understanding EPL is fundamental to equipment selection and is tested in CompEx assessments.
EPL for Gas Zones (IEC 60079-0)
| EPL | Zone | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Ga | Zone 0 | Very high level of protection. Equipment with two independent levels of protection, or safe even with two independent faults. Suitable for Zone 0 where explosive atmosphere is continuously present. |
| Gb | Zone 1 | High level of protection. Suitable for Zone 1 where explosive atmosphere is likely in normal operation. Also suitable for Zone 2. |
| Gc | Zone 2 | Enhanced level of protection. Suitable for Zone 2 only, where explosive atmosphere is unlikely in normal operation. |
EPL for Dust Zones
| EPL | Zone | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Da | Zone 20 | Very high protection for continuously present combustible dust |
| Db | Zone 21 | High protection for dust zones where atmosphere is likely in normal operation |
| Dc | Zone 22 | Enhanced protection for dust zones where atmosphere is unlikely normally |
EPL and Equipment Selection
The rule is simple: equipment EPL must match or exceed the zone EPL requirement. EPL Ga equipment can be installed in Zone 0, 1, or 2. EPL Gb equipment can be installed in Zone 1 or 2 but NOT Zone 0. EPL Gc equipment can only be installed in Zone 2.
The EPL is shown on the ATEX/IECEx certificate and on the equipment marking plate. Look for the letters Ga, Gb, Gc, Da, Db, or Dc in the certification string. For example: II 2 G Ex d IIB T4 Gb — the EPL here is Gb, meaning the equipment is suitable for Zone 1 and Zone 2.
EPL vs Category
Older ATEX certification used equipment categories (Category 1, 2, 3) rather than EPL. Category 1 corresponds to EPL Ga/Da, Category 2 to EPL Gb/Db, and Category 3 to EPL Gc/Dc. Both systems may be encountered when inspecting equipment certified before the EPL concept was introduced.
