IEC 60079-0 — General Requirements for Ex Equipment
IEC 60079-0 is the foundation of the IEC 60079 series, setting general requirements that apply to all Ex equipment regardless of the specific protection type. Understanding IEC 60079-0 provides the framework within which all other parts of the series operate.
What IEC 60079-0 Covers
- Definitions — explosive atmosphere, hazardous area, EPL, gas group, temperature class
- General construction requirements — materials, fasteners, surfaces
- Electrical requirements — creepage and clearance distances
- Temperature limits — equipment surface temperature and T-class
- Marking requirements — Ex marking plate content and format
- Documentation requirements — for certification and installation
Equipment Protection Levels (EPL)
IEC 60079-0 introduces the concept of Equipment Protection Levels (EPL), which categorises equipment by its likelihood of becoming an ignition source:
| EPL | Description | Zone |
|---|---|---|
| Ga | Very high protection — equipment for Zone 0 | Zone 0 |
| Gb | High protection — equipment for Zone 1 and above | Zone 1 |
| Gc | Enhanced protection — equipment for Zone 2 | Zone 2 |
| Da | Very high protection for dust Zone 20 | Zone 20 |
| Db | High protection for dust Zone 21 | Zone 21 |
| Dc | Enhanced protection for dust Zone 22 | Zone 22 |
EPL Ga equipment can be used in Zone 0, 1, or 2. EPL Gb equipment can be used in Zone 1 or 2 but NOT Zone 0. EPL Gc equipment can only be used in Zone 2. Always verify the EPL on the Ex certificate matches the zone classification of the installation area.
